The Pointe of Ballet Shoes

Ballet shoes, also called ballet slippers by many dancers, are shoes designed solely for ballet dancing.  Due to the motions of ballet dancers and the complicated steps and routines they must perform, the shoes must be extremely lightweight.  Often they are made from soft leather and canvas, or even from satin. Their soles are very thin and flexible.  These shoes are sometimes mistaken for the more advanced ballet shoes called pointes, or “toe shoes.”

Choreographer Round Up

Sonya Tayeh

Raised in Detroit, Michigan, Sonya Tayeh gives some credit to the culture of the city as being one of the foundations of her dance style.  Her style of dance is short, aggressive, and full of life.  Tayeh calls the unique flavor of her style “combat jazz.”  The dancer and choreographer started dancing in college at Wayne State University, and in the year 2002 she graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts.

The other night I was going through some boxes of books and old things when I happened upon some Playbills and programs from my last trip to New York City. Because I love dancing, seeing shows on Broadway gives me a boost. It’s like a natural high that I can’t find any other way. On my last trip I saw two shows, but then I got to thinking back to all of the musicals and shows that I have seen and how they inspired me.  Here are a few of the shows that I have seen, and a little bit about how much I absolutely loved them.
